Description

Scientific name: Corica soborna (Ganges river sprat).

  • Local names: Keski, Kachki, Taki etc.

  • It’s a small, freshwater or river fish, often caught in large numbers.

Ecological / Fisheries Info

  • Keski contributes a large share of fish landings in some areas, e.g. in Kaptai Lake, along with other small indigenous fish species.

  • There are concerns about overfishing and the impact on biodiversity: using nets that catch Keski sometimes also catch young carp and other fish fry (which are important for maintaining fish populations).

Nutritional / Health Aspect

  • Keski contains good amounts of essential trace elements like Zinc (Zn), Selenium (Se), Manganese (Mn). It’s suggested that small fish like Keski (often eaten whole) can help people meet daily micronutrient needs.

  • Because they’re small and eaten whole, you also get benefits from bones etc.

Culinary Uses

  • Keski is often cooked dry-style (i.e. less gravy), but also used in curry.

  • Common recipe: Sukha Keski Maacah — dry-fried Keski with onion, tomatoes, green chillies etc. Also used in dried fish form (shutki) and in combination with sour ingredients or spices.

If you want, I can send you some pictures of Keski and perhaps recipes, or info about price & availability in your area (Warsaw or Bangladesh)?
